“I am an opiate addict. As of March 18 of this year I have been clean of all substances, illegal and prescribed. Reason is methadone maintenance since April 1 of 2009. When I came to the clinic I was not only sick, but scared to death. Had no idea what I was getting into nor did I think it was right, I had not support from family and even lost “so called friends”. Within a month things began to change. I would get up, drive so many miles to the clinic and dose, I was beginning to lose the cravings and physical need. I started going to groups, some were mandatory and others aren’t. Since coming to Metro, I have gained self confidence. I’ve never liked myself or respected myself. I still have a long way to go, and a lot more work, but with the groups, my outside counseling, and the support of the counselors of Metro, I’m going to make it another day. I’m beginning to get the family support that I do desperately need. For instance, I lost my car a few weeks back, thought I had no one to turn to, when my sister and her son and wife came to help me with another car. I asked why, and said “we see you stepping up to the plate, and someone needs to help you”. I haven’t spoke to my son in a year, right when I got out of detox and started with methadone maintenance. He couldn’t, I wouldn’t let me be in his life, but all this changes today – Easter Sunday. I made a call where he and his family were, visiting his grandmother, my mom. He took the phone and we talked for about 20 minutes.” ANONOYMOUS Concord Metro Treatment Center
